Composers Note - Hypogée: after SG-3 is an acousmatic composition that is inspired by the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest artificial hole ever drilled by humanity. Over the years, the project became surrounded by stories and speculation, including the well-known myth that strange sounds were recorded from deep within the Earth. Whether true or not, the story fascinated me because of the way it sits between science, belief, and imagination. The work begins with sounds associated with theology and faith before gradually moving into the world of machinery, drilling, and industrial activity. As the descent continues, these materials become increasingly transformed and distorted, eventually giving way to a sonic environment where their origins are no longer clear. Built from musique concrète recordings and electronic sounds, Hypogée is not an attempt to recreate the events surrounding SG-3, but rather a reflection on the stories we create when confronted with the unknown.
